# Sub-tasks

Break Stories into smaller pieces of work with their own owners, states, and workflow tracking.

Sub-tasks provide a way to break down larger Stories into smaller, more manageable pieces of work. Each Sub-task can have its own owner, state, and tracking, while remaining connected to its parent Story.

Much like a Story, you can estimate Sub-tasks, connect them to VCS, and move them across your team's workflow. Assign Sub-tasks to your teammates and view progress across Shortcut views.

## Enable/Disable Sub-tasks

You can turn on Sub-tasks in your workspace by going to **Settings > Features**. Turning off Sub-tasks will remove the feature from the UI, however, any Sub-tasks that were created in your workspace before disabling will still be visible as individual Stories.

## Creating Sub-tasks

Sub-tasks created in a Parent Story will inherit the Epic and Team fields. Click into Sub-tasks to edit them and add a description.

Another option is to use the **Add from...** action to convert an existing Story into a Sub-task of the Parent Story.
